The intense cold that gripped Gulbarga city and the district in the third week of December has returned again, with the minimum temperature dipping to little over 10 degrees Celsius in the last two days. Cold winds sweeping the plains of north Karnataka has affected normal life and led to a fall in attendance of children in schools.
A random check at district hospitals confirmed that many aged people, admitted for different ailments, are unable to withstand the cold wave and are not responding to treatment. Doctors express concern that they may succumb to the cold wave if the scenario continues for a few more days. Sources in the Meterological Department said that due to the easterly wave, cold wave conditions are expected at isolated places in the state, such as north-interior Karnataka, during the next two days and temperatures may fall below normal at a few places over north-interior Karnataka.
The Meterological Department said, Gulbarga saw the coldest day of 2010 on December 22, at 7.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest in 65 years. The city had recorded its lowest temperature of 5.6 degrees celsius on December 18, 1945.
