Minor Airports at Gulbarga and Shimoga would be operational by July 2012.

Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj said, Delivering his address to the joint session of the state Legislature, he said minor airports at Shimoga, Gulbarga, Bijapur and Hassan are being developed on public-private-partnership basis.

Work on the construction of Greenfield airports at Gulbarga and Shimoga, taken up simultaneously in April, is progressing satisfactorily and both the airports are likely to be operationalised as scheduled in mid-2012.

The construction of the runway of Gulbarga airport from zero to 1,900 metres was progressing, and so far earth work of Sub Grade Layer (SGL) has been completed and the first layer of Granular Sub Base (GSB) has been completed at the end of the Runway End and Safety Area (RESA). Apart from this, the first layer of the GSB has been laid up to 475 metres.

The first phase of the airport which is being constructed at a cost of 185 crore include runway to the length of 1.91km and width 45mt.It also include apron, isolation bay, terminal building, air traffic control tower, radar room, roads, car parking, etc.
