This will be Karnataka’s second such institution, after Bangalore!
Union Labour Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge, who was responsible for sanctioning and establishing Karnataka’s and the country’s first medical college from the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in Bangalore, will be setting up the second medical college from ESIC in his home district of Gulbarga.
The Union Labour Minister made the announcement after inaugurating the state-of-the-art ESIC Model Hospital at Rajajinagar in partnership with Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research Unit.
The senior Congress leader said it would be possible to set up the proposed medical college in Gulbarga next year itself if the state health department cooperated with his ministry. The government hospital in Gulbarga should be given to the ESIC for two years to comply with the formalities related to setting up new medical college. We will return the hospital to the State government after two years and move to the campus of the new medical college. The government can even use the hospital then to set up its own medical college.

In 1997 I came to serve at ESI Hospital Shahabadh as surgeon.The IP’s and their families were in terrible condition to visit hospital as it was too faraway from the town with no facility to travel.Always people prefer to travel to Gulbarga GH rather than coming there. The Hospital never took a shape to function completely even to provide facilities to treat 30 patients.I was very disappointed & disgusted with the authorities with their lethargy in implementing & to start the services. At that time in fact I opposed the idea of starting an hospital in Shahabadh and waste of funds as nothing was moving to improve. I strongly suggested to the relevant authorities to move this Hospital to Gulbarga as it serves more IP’s and their families. Best wishes for the people of Gulberga who are working in Industrial sector
