Gulbarga District Magistrate & Deputy Commissioner R Vishal who is also the chairman of the District Road Safety Committee has issued an order banning the movement of all kinds of heavy vehicles(Maxicabs, Bus and Tractors) on the Kurikota bridge near Kamalapur on Humnabad-Bijapur National Highway 218 with immediate effect.
Exercising powers conferred under section 115 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and under rule 221 (A) (5) of Karnataka Motor Vehicle Rules 1989, the DC has prohibited plying of all heavy vehicles on the bridge owing to its delicate position. The bridge is stated to be under dilapidated condition and experts will be making a spot inspection of the bridge shortly. The heavy vehicles have been asked to take the alternate route onTavargera Cross – Tavargera – Harsur – Tadkal Cross – Nagur and Mahagaon Cross to join at km 381 point on the national highway 218.
The executive engineer of the national highway division, Bijapur, after inspecting the bridge has opined that the stones at the bottom of the bridge are found on the brink of falling in to the river and the bridge was producing vibrations due to running of heavy vehicles. The bridge was not fit for vehicular traffic and if the traffic was continued there was a possibility of the bridge becoming further weak resulting in the complete halt of traffic.

Many student’s and Business people travel very frequently. The Diversion road is worst and 45km of this distance is full of pits and it is Kaccha type of road. I request the government should take some immediate steps to construct the new bridge.
